Choose a name that reflects your cultural heritage
The legacy of your baby is an essential part of who he is and probably want to reflect its name. Your religious preference may lead you to the biblical names, for example, or maybe your family keeps the tradition of calling the firstborn as their parents. If you like the name does not meet the family tradition, you can use it as a middle name (or third or fourth!).
You can encourage the family to help you choose, although this can be a double-edged sword, because your relatives may have a strong opinion about the name too should take your child. In the end, the decision has to be yours and your partner.
If you do not like the name suggest you, thank them for the help, but expects to announce a final decision until the baby is born, to avoid tension.
Another thing that can happen is you want to call your baby like a loved one who has passed away. Naturally you want your son or daughter take the name of that person, even though they never meet. One day you will explain to your child why you decided to call it and how special it was that person in your life. That can help you feel more identified with their roots. Children love to hear stories that help them understand their place in the family.
Maybe for you it is very important that your child connect with their roots, especially if your baby will grow up bicultural or in a culture different from your own. If you and your partner have different religious beliefs or from different cultures, you may consider a compound name.
